Friday Night Live

Friday Night Live Friday Night Live

"Now I ain’t got kids…/Hopefully we’ll build a better place for them to live in peace/ and say piece/and mean peace /without, even ever pullin it…” – FridayNightLive

Shawn Friday is FridayNightLive and on a bad day his alter ego may take over bringing forth Friday the 13th. The Charlotte native was born in 1980, a true “80’s baby”, to a traditional middle class family. The youngest of three boys, he got a chance to see life through his brother’s experiences.  This helped him to make wise decisions while growing up in one of the city’s most crime infested areas.  However, when Friday began to drift away in an immature attempt to become a product of his environment, his wise and protective father would circle the block and snatch a young Friday Night Live into his car.  His father had bigger plans for him and they weren’t about to be spoiled by falling in with the wrong crowd.  Friday excelled in grade school but his achievements were only praised in his home.  He caught hell from his friends and peers in his neighborhood for being cut from a different cloth.

Nevertheless he came to know kids with his same plight in middle school. This is where he began to channel his anger and emotions through music and poetry. Three like minds formed a clique called Brazen, and with one old desktop computer, one small beat machine and one corded microphone they made it happen. They perfected their talent in high school and throughout college.  As freshman they hit a high by doing shows in Chapel Hill, Greensboro and NC State where they shared the same stage with accomplished acts from that era.  Unfortunately, one of the members retired after dropping a solo project - deciding there was no more he could do with music.  Friday took a hiatus as well to finish college and the group’s dreams of making music evaporated.  Just when all hope was lost, Friday met a young cocky Westside veteran name Pistol Peter who sparked his flame again.  The timing was perfect!  The two college roommates began making music together.  The rest is history.

Friday’s flow is a bit unorthodox coming from the south. When he speaks you know he’s from “Crown Town”.  However, his style and sound are a potent mixture of traditional east coast and dirty south.  What makes this man stand out in what seems like a sea of southern drawled rappers is the complexity in his verses and his on and off beat flow.  There’s also his lyrical content on tracks like “Glory” and his split personality on songs like “Dreams” that set him apart from the pack.  His early influences are from greats like Biggie and Nas from the east coast, Snoop and the Dogpound from the West and the entire Dungeon Family which includes Outkast and the GoodieMOB.  He still rides with his adolescent clique Brazen but now appears with NC Standup – rounding out the roster.  Prepare to have your mind blown, as you enter the world of FridayNightLive/Friday the 13th.

Whichever side of his personality and talents show up, he promises not to bore you.
